Pre-Investigation

Fire Station # 18 is located at 1908 Carleton Ave. in Fort Worth, TX 76107 and was one of five fire stations constructed during the big oil boom that had expanded the city of Fort Worth. Stations 14 through 21 were added during Chief Standifer Ferguson’s command which stemmed from December 1919 though July 1939. Number 18 was constructed approximately around 1921 or 1923. This station is known to have paranormal activity as reported by the crews that have worked there.

Captain Scott James is currently stationed at #18 and states that the current activity in the building is caused by a mischievous spirit which the firemen have dubbed Clawed. It is believe that Clawed was a fireman named Claude who retired from the station and later suffered a heart attack and passed away. Whether he passed on grounds or some other place is uncertain.

Some of the reported activity that the Captain and other firemen have reported is the door that leads to the garage area had blown open and a gust of wind came through the dining area into the kitchen. The Captain and two other firemen had witnessed this event and set out to find out the reason behind it. They walked into the garage fully expecting to find someone had left an outer door open and the wind blowing through but to their surprise the area was shut tight. There was no reason for the door to have opened or a wind to blow through. They assured us that the door is a heavy door and not easily bumped open. On another occasion one of the firemen that had been stationed at 18 for a while was teasing newer member about the station’s ghost. They were upstairs when this happened. The newer fireman was a little shaken up and refused to believe there was a ghost in the building when they heard the door open below them. The first fireman told the new guy, “Let’s go down and meet him.” He had assumed that the door had been open by someone coming into the building but when they went down stairs to see who it was they couldn’t find anyone. Again the bay door and any other outer doors were closed so that the door couldn’t have been blown open.

One fireman has reported there have been incidents when he is upstairs where the sleeping quarters are when the toilet seat in the bathroom will slam down on its own. Another fireman that used to be stationed at 18 also related that there are times when no one has been in the bathroom or showers in the morning and he had been the first person out of bed. When he walked into the bathroom, however, the odor of someone just having showered and shaved was strong.

Another account happened prior to remodeling of the fire station when there was a couch where the current stairs are. A fire man was sitting on the couch and heard a noise in the kitchen. He looked in the kitchen and spotted a man wearing an old fashioned uniform who was standing in the kitchen that just disappeared. The ghost has also made the crew miss a call as one night they went to get on the truck and found that somehow all the hoses had been pulled from the truck. Due to the length of time it takes to reload the hoses the station had to give the call to another crew.

Another fireman had complained to the Captain that someone had been messing with the thermostat during the night. However the fireman realized he was sleeping next to the thermostat and no one had been near his bed.

The captain and other firefighters have said that they’ve heard noises during the night from the kitchen and dining area that sound either like a group playing dominos or someone in the kitchen cooking and banging pots and pans around.

On another occasion one of the firemen was waiting for someone to arrive at the station and so he stood in the doorway to the computer room where the blinds were parted so he could see out. He turned from the room for a moment then turned back and the blinds had been closed. Another incident that happened within the computer room was that one night the captain had seen someone sitting in front of a computer with the lights off. He thought it was one of the firemen working over time and asked others why the fireman was still there only to find out he wasn’t there and no one had been in the computer room.

The firemen are a friendly group of men and women and welcome us into the fire station to do a paranormal investigation. We look forward to working with them.

Investigation

The Stockyard Paranormal Investigation group visited the Fort Worth fire station #18 on August 18, 2007 at 7PM. The investigators were Kevin, Casey, Monica, Cheryl, Jessica, Terri and Terri’s daughter Jamie. Captain Scott James and the other fire fighters graciously welcomed the team into the station. As the investigators split into three groups the fire fighters enjoyed a movie in their upstairs TV room.

Kevin, Casey and Jamie were the first group to investigate the sleep area of the firehouse located upstairs next to the TV room. The sleeping quarters actually consisted of two rooms, a large room with two beds and a smaller room with one bed in it. When they first began the investigation Casey experienced an odd feeling toward the doorway of the smaller bedroom. She walked to the door way and shot a picture into the small room catching an orb. She took another immediately following the first, and saw nothing on her camera. In the larger of the two bedrooms Kevin got a higher than average EMF reading from .5 to .9 directly over a chair that sits at the foot of one of the beds. The group found wiring that ran under the chair that might have caused the reading. Kevin also experienced a wobble on the EMF meter from .1 to .2 in a stationary position. He handed the EMF meter over to Casey who did not pick up anything on it until she moved it close to Kevin. Next to Kevin she got several high readings from the .5 to .9 range but when she moved it away from him or closer to herself it stopped. She moved the EMF meter right and left and up and down but the energy seemed to be standing next to Kevin.

While they were upstairs Kevin asked Claude a/k/a “Clawed” (see pre-investigation report) to give a sign of his presence, either making a noise or touching someone. Shortly after his request Jamie felt that someone tapped her on the shoulder.

Monica and Cheryl investigated the computer room, dining area and kitchen located on the first floor as their first area in the fire station. While in the computer room Monica used a set of dowsing rods to focus on the spirit energy and communicate with who ever was in the building. She received yes responses to the following questions: Is your name Claude? Do you know you’re dead? Would you like to play Dominos? Were you good at playing Dominos? Are you happy here? Do you like the firefighters who live here? Are you the one who sometimes shows up in the kitchen making something? Are you making the image of a face over by the wall that Cheryl can see?

Cheryl had left her tape recorder running in the kitchen area while taking EMF readings throughout the first floor. When she returned the pause button was pushed. She was sure she had not pushed the button and didn't hear it being depressed from where she was.

While everyone else was in the house, Jessica and Terri investigated the bay where the truck is kept as well as lockers of equipment. The workout room is off the back of the bay and the captain had left the back door open so that a breeze could blow through the area since it wasn’t air conditioned. The investigators were concerned that the noise from the busy Camp Bowie Boulevard would inhibit getting any electronic voice phenomenon “EVP”. Jessica and Terri set about walking through the garage asking for Claude to give a sign he was there. Again the noise from the street interfered with any evidence the spirit might have made so Jessica and Terri spent the time taking several pictures and looking and listening for any sign of activity. Terri eventually went out to the driveway to get pictures from the outside in. As she was focusing on her camera something tapped her on the back of her head. Because of the weather that week and the partly cloudy sky, her first initial thought was that a large raindrop had hit her on the head. When she reached up to the spot on her head it was completely dry. She then searched the drive for any sign that something had fallen out of a tree, off the roof or out of the sky and had hit her on the head, but there was nothing that seemed likely.

As Terri and Jessica sat on the back of the fire truck, despite the noise from the busy street Jessica’s recorder picked an EVP that seems to say “Go.”

The investigators switched their position in the fire station and Kevin, Jamie and Casey moved to the downstairs area while Monica and Cheryl joined Terri and Jessica in the upstairs sleeping areas. As they gathered in the dining area to re-group they stood and discussed events that had just happened to them. Jamie sat at the dining table and was looking at the screen of the camcorder Monica had left on the bar between the kitchen and dining area. As Jamie watched on the video screen a light orb streaked across the kitchen. The kitchen was visible to her and she didn’t witness anything in the room, the orb was only seen on the camcorder screen.

As Monica, Cheryl, Terri and Jessica moved upstairs, they realized the firefighters were busy in the larger bedroom. They waited in the TV area until they could confirm it was okay that they went into the bunkroom. Once inside, they realized what the firefighters were up to. They had put a spooky dummy in one of the beds as a joke.

Monica, Cheryl, Jessica and Terri sat in the larger bedroom trying to collect evidence. In the larger bedroom Jessica’s camera took a picture all by it’s self of a brown chair. When she reviewed the picture behind the chair were two orbs. In that same room as the team concentrated and tried to talk to Claude, Jessica felt a cold breeze so she took a picture over her head and behind herself which captured a picture of a small bright orb by the blue lockers in the room.

The team eventually moved into the smaller bedroom. Terri had felt dizzy when she had toured the room earlier but as they settled down to do the investigation she no longer had the same feeling. As Monica, Cheryl and Jessica began taking pictures in the room, orbs seemed to be floating around Terri. As all the flashes were going off in Terri’s direction she felt as though Monica, who sat across from her, moved up and then down and then stabilized. Terri said right after the feeling of Monica moving she saw a small pin-point of green light that moved from behind Monica and raced up the wall to the ceiling over Monica’s head. Cheryl told Terri that her camera puts out a green light however when Terri saw the light from Cheryl’s camera she determined it wasn’t the same light or size of the light she had seen. Cheryl and Jessica also saw orbs as the flashes were going off. Cheryl said, “Don’t pick on Terri.” Both Jessica’s and Monica’s recorder captured an EVP right after this that sounds like “yeah.”

While the ladies were upstairs, Kevin, Casey and Jamie were downstairs. Jamie and Casey went into the bay area where Terri and Jessica had been earlier. Jamie walked into the workout room and felt and heard Casey following her. She turned to say something to Casey but no one was there.

Soon Cheryl, Monica, Jessica and Terri met up with Kevin, Jamie and Casey. The team was going to group together in the dining room to use their combined efforts to communicate with Claude using the dowsing rods. Before they could begin, however, the fire fighters were called out on an emergency.

With the fire fighters gone we decided to gather in the TV room on the second floor since most of the activity we experienced occurred in the upstairs areas. Terri gave an example of how to use the dowsing rods for the newest SPI members. The first question she asked was if Claude was in the building and she got a yes response. She then asked if he was happy the firemen acknowledged him and again got a yes response. She asked if the firemen were his friends and if his name was really Claude and got positive responses. Claude also claimed to have died in the fire station and that he was a fireman. Terri then turned the rods over to Jessica and showed her how to ask yes and no questions. Jessica asked Claude if he knew what year he died. She got a positive response that he died in the 1930s and Jessica proceeded to go through the years beginning with 1935 and then moved back to 1932. She got a positive response when she asked if he died in 1934. While Jessica was using the dowsing rods Kevin picked up readings on his EMF meter that ranged from .1 to .2. Kevin tried using the dowsing rods with no responses. Jamie then tried the rods as well but didn’t get a response either. Terri then took the rods back and tried to use them again and got positive responses when she asked if Claude was in the room and if he wanted to play dominoes. The firemen had returned to the station just as Terri started her second set of questions and as she began to get responses again. Did Claude possibly go on the run with them?

All in all the Stockyard Paranormal Investigators felt the fire station presented some substantial evidence and personal experiences that lived up to the buildings reputation. The Stockyard Paranormal Investigators want to give a very warm thank you to Captain James and the crew at fire station 18 for their wonderful hospitality and inviting us in.
