Cowtown Coliseum

Pre-Investigation

Investigation

Pre-Investigation

In preparation for a full investigation, a preliminary visit was made to the Cowtown Coliseum for background information.

The Fort Worth Stockyards area was a natural development because of the location of Fort Worth in relation to the cattle trails and railroads. The Coliseum was actually built out of necessity, though it is graced with a romantic Spanish-style exterior.  Finished in 1907 at a cost of $250,000, the Coliseum gave Texas “the largest, most elegant and perfectly appointed livestock exhibition building in the South, without a superior in the U.S.

While picturesque on the outside, the Coliseum is utilitarian inside.  It is basically a dirt arena enclosed by concession stands topped by bleacher style seating all under a single red-tiled roof.  This has not kept it from being a venue for numerous celebrities of all ilks. The project started in 1907 and was completed in 1908 (after only 88 days of construction!) and began as a livestock exhibition facility and was built by the Swift and Armour meat packing companies.  In 1918, it hosted the first indoor rodeo.  It was also the home of the Fort Worth Fat Stock Show, as well as performances by Enrico Caruso, Indian Chief Quannah Parker, the Ballet Russe, and Elvis Presley, just to name a few.

The Stockyards area and the Coliseum have seen booms and busts and the economy of the area went through a marked decline in the 60s and 70s as the meat packing industries left.  However, in 1976, the Stockyards was recognized as a national historic site and tourism brought new energy to the area and the North Fort Worth Historical Society was formed the same year to revitalize the area.

With the infusion of new interest, new faces, and (most importantly) new capitol, the Coliseum made a comeback.  It was renovated and brought to modern-day standards in 1986, including a total overhaul of heat, air conditioning, production, lighting, and sound systems.  Championship rodeos, bull riding and celebrity performances still feature there often.  The Stockyards consistently rank in the Top 20 tourism attractions in the state and the Coliseum is considered to be a historic jewel that features prominently in the Stockyards mystique.

While the structure has a proud heritage, it has more history that is somewhat less touted.

During interviews with various personnel involved in the daily operation, several things came to light:

l        A rodeo clown, that also often appeared at Billy Bob's, is said to frequent the building in the guise of a cat.  While not necessarily a shocking development that a cat might show up in a building with as many doors as the Coliseum, this one wears the favorite neck tie of Joe, the rodeo clown

l        Sources were unsure of the number, but people have died at the Coliseum.

l        Sources also reported animals have died at the Coliseum.  One particular rumor was that a hide displayed in Billy Bob's was supplied by a bull sold at the Coliseum.  It is unknown where the bull was actually slaughtered.

l        There are bodies buried at the Coliseum.  The exact location was not disclosed.

l        There are multiple instances of people requesting cremation followed by having their ashes deposited at the Coliseum, usually by scattering them over the dirt arena.

l        Lastly, and most interesting, one person related that after reentering the building after locking up for the day, an odd feeling descended on this person whom then saw a dark man-shaped object on the far side of the arena.  There was also faint voices heard.  As the voiced faded, so did the object.  The person then encouraged who ever was there to carry on and left without further delay.

These instances are recorded as anecdotes and are all unconfirmed.

Investigation

On October 5th the Stockyard Paranormal Investigators visited Cowtown Coliseum on E. Exchange Avenue in the Fort Worth Stockyards. The members were Kevin, Terri, Monica, Jessica, Casey, Karen, Caitlin, and D. They were joined with members of the Spirit of the Baker investigation group, Allison and Jeff and Joel from Channel 11 news.

It took everyone time to gather, as there was some confusion about the time and the ability to get in the building after the rodeo. Once inside, the first ones to arrive mingled and met each other and began touring the building before the workers left and turned out the lights. Joel noticed a black cat right away and we began wondering if that was “Joe” the rodeo clown that was reported in our pre-investigation report. This cat, however, did not sport a necktie.

The Spirit of the Baker group moved to the West End area of the coliseum and Kevin and Monica joined them. Walked to the north side and then up to the balcony on the north. As they investigated they went down the circular staircase onto the arena. They had seen a shadow person and followed as the person disappeared.

While they were tracking down the shadow person and noises they heard in the building, Karen, D and Casey were in the opposite side of the arena and they began their initial investigation by the front doors. As they moved to the right of the doors and down the corridor, an incredibly heavy, hot feeling hit Casey and Karen. They stopped for a bit before moving a little farther down the hallway after the feeling passed.

Casey got an odd feeling while passing a wagon as they walked down a hallway and took a picture. She then walked a little further and stopped as she became incredibly dizzy and had to hold on to the wall due to a feeling of falling.

At different times Casey, D and Kevin felt something strange in the bar in the corner of the arena. While investigating the bar area Casey was looking over the wooden wall/railing and down to the seats of a second wooden wall, and saw a dark shadow which was round, kind of like the top of a head. Possibly the shadow person seen earlier by others that night.

Terri, Jessica and Caitlin investigated in other areas and first went to the storage area behind the arena on the north side. They took several photos in the room but none of them felt that there was much if any activity in that room so they soon left the area. As they proceeded to the arena area they came across on employee of the coliseum who was spending the night in the building. He told them that he had heard strange noises from the bar area over the arena on numerous occasions. So the ladies headed to the bar area. While in that area, Caitlin took a photo that has a reddish haze in it. Jessica and Terri had some strange feelings in that area as well. While they continued to investigate, Joel joined them and told Terri that he needed to leave and she left the area to escort him and Allison and Jeff out of the building. While Terri was gone Jessica and Caitlin Joined Monica and Kevin still trying to track that shadow man. Upon Terri's return to the group the three groups regrouped into two groups of four people each. Terri joined Karen, D and Casey and Jessica and Caitlin joined Kevin and Monica.

Jessica, Caitlin, Kevin and Monica continued to look for the shadow person at the eastern end of the arena. As they followed bangs and knocks, they walked along the outside of the arena. They all stopped and held their breath as they distinctly heard the sound of someone walking on the cement floor wearing spurs. Could this have been a long ago cowboy preparing for the rodeo?

While they were focused on finding the shadow person, Casey, Karen, D and Terri sat on the North side of the arena and asked for signs of a presence. Soon they heard noises emitting from the Northeast corner behind the arena. Terri and D headed toward the noises with Karen and Casey following behind. As they approached a concession area they ruled out some of the noise as possibly made by a couple of refrigerator units that were locked up in the area. Terri noticed a set of stairs that lead up and over a stage area of the arena and headed for the bottom of the stairs but before she began to climb the stairs she looked up and saw a set of eyes looking back down at her. At the top of the stairs sat a large possum making Terri decide he could have the upstairs area all to his self.

As Casey, Karen, D and Terri headed to the front of the Coliseum to go around the arena to meet up with the rest of the group, Karen felt an odd sensation passing the Northwest corner of the arena. She asked Terri if she’d felt it and Terri said she hadn’t so they went back to the area and immediately Terri could feel a sensation but not a strong one. D went back into the stands and said he felt a cold area or cold spot which is supposed to be a sign of spirit activity. Terri went up a different aisle and as she reached the upper area also felt an electricity in the air. When she told them she felt it, Karen snapped a photo that was filled with orbs. Soon Terri stated the feeling was leaving and Karen shot another picture showing the orbs were gone. Karen then felt the electric feeling Terri had just had. She took one more picture toward where the feeling seemed to be coming from and again captured several orbs in the photo. There will be a question of orbs being any sign of evidence in this investigation due to the dirt floor of the arena but for orbs to follow a feeling of static electricity is kind of exciting.

Once the group all met they began to use dowsing rods to try to contact any spirit in the coliseum.
